Assessment of Sea Surface Signatures for Naval Platforms using SAR Imagery (AssenSAR) is an EPSRC funded project led by Prof. Alin Achim which started in January 2018. AssenSAR has Dr. Oktay Karakus and Dr. Igor Rizaev as Research Associates in Image Processing and Mathematical Modelling, respectively.
This project is concerned with the development and validation of new sea surface models but also with the design of very advanced methods for enhancing SAR image quality and for subsequent information extraction.
The results of this project will be important in the detection and tracking of illegal vessels involved in smuggling goods or humans. They will also be informative for the understanding and classification of the characteristics of wake generating vessels. The work could also benefit the design of stealthy vessels that can avoid detection, reducing the risk to naval operations.
